I have purchased an Epson R300 and I am totally gob-smacked by the print quality.

Now the time has come to change the ink cartridges and so I decided to find a way of refilling them as the cost for new ones is so ridiculous.

The cartridges on this printer are particularly complicated and after much thought and experimentation, I found a relatively easy way to refill them.

I just wondered if anyone knew what type of ink this printer uses. Is it a standard dye based ink, Ultrachrome, Durabrite or something completely different?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm not so sure that R300 ink tanks can be refilled. As you know, color printing is disabled when the ink tank is reported as empty by the metering chip. Therefore the chip must be reset which is s aimple enough procedure with "most" Epson printers. Unfortunately though, the latest generation of aftermarket Epson chip resetters does not seem to work on R300 ink tanks. Although the contacts line up perfectly with the resetter, the process failed every time I tried it.

The good news is, a ton of R300 compatible "generic" tanks have hit the market over the last few weeks and they're certainly much cheaper than genuine Epson. Typically a full set of 6 goes for between $35 and $45 with individual tanks selling for $6 or $7 each. These are newly manufactured Epson clones, not refilled tnaks.

Hopefully a new generation of resetters with R300 capability will be available soon. In the meantime, I'd like to hear about yout refilling technique.
